ANSWERS POSTED ON BLOG

1. State Alfred Wegener’s hypothesis about how the Earth’s continents have moved.

Divergent boundary-TWO BOUNDARIES MOVE AWAY FROM EACH OTHER
Convergent boundary-TWO BOUNDARIES MOVE TOWARDS EACH OTHER
Transform boundary-TWO BOUNDARIES PASS EACH OTHER IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS

6. True or False- Earthquakes can occur at plate boundaries and fault lines.

Earth Changes Pre- Review #3
ANSWERS POSTED ON BLOG

1. Scientist know about the interior of the Earth due to SEISMIC waves that release energy during an earthquake.

2. Rocks change shape and volume after an earthquake as tension, compression, and shearing takes place. This is know as STRESS.

3. An earthquake occurs deep within the interior of the Earth at this point,FOCUS.  Energy is release and travels to the EPICENTER, which is directly above the point within the Earth’s interior.

4. Energy travels to create an earthquake within three different seismic waves. Name the waves and describe its energy movement.
P WAVE- COMPRESS AND EXPANDS GROUND WHERE ENERGY IS RELEASED- WE DO NOT FEEL
S WAVE- LEFT RIGHT AND UP AND DOWN MOVEMENT WHERE ENERGY IS RELEASED- WE DO NOT FEEL
SURFACE WAVES- COMBINATION OF P AND S WAVES WE FEEL AS ENERGY IS TRANSFERRED TO EPICENTER

5. The RICHTER scale records the size of the seismic waves through the use of a SEISMOGRAPH that is buried within the continental or oceanic crust.  The scale record the release of the energy from 0-9, which is called the MAGNITUDE of the earthquake.

6. A volcano is a weak uplifted spot within the crust that has melted material called MAGMA and once this reaches the surface it is called LAVA turning into solid rock.

7. Almost all earthquakes and volcanoes occur at (circle the correct answer). A IS THE CORRECT ANSWER
a. faults, plate boundaries, Ring of Fire
b- faults and plate boundaries
c- Ring of Fire and breaks in the mantle

8. Describe the three types of volcanoes
SHIELD VOLCANO= WIDE SLOPING MOUNTAINS
Cinder Cone   = STEEP CONE SHAPED HILL OR MOUNTAIN
COMPOSITE VOLCANO=TALL CONE SHAPED MOUNTAIN WITH LAYERS OF ASH AND LAVA
Caldera= volcano that can collapse due to magma emptying.

9. The type rocks that form from magma include BASALT and PUMICE (that can float).

10. Rocks are classified into three groups
1.SEDIMENTARY
2.IGNEOUS
3.METAMORPHIC

11. What does it mean to classify in science (think back to process skills).
GROUP ROCKS BASED ON OBSERVED CHARACTERISTICS AND TRAITS THAT ARE SIMILAR.

Pre-Review Guide #1 Due Monday

Earth Changes    Pre- Review #1
ANSWERS POSTED ON BLOG
1. How does the temperature change as you go from the surface towards the center of the Earth?
THE TEMPERATURE CONTINUES TO INCREASE AS YOU GET CLOSER TO THE INNER CORE.

2. The three main layers that make up the Earth are the CRUST,MANTLE, AND CORE.

3. The CRUST is a layer of rock that forms the outer skin of the Earth.

4. Basalt is found on the OCEANIC CRUST .Granite is found on the CONTINENTAL CRUST.

5. What is the difference between the inner and outer core?
Inner Core-SOLID SPHERE OF IRON AND NICKEL - HOTTEST AREA
Outer Core-MOLTEN MATERIAL OF IRON AND NICKEL - NOT AS HOT

6. How do convection currents move inside the Earth?
CORRECT ANSWER A
a- hot materials rise, while cooler materials sink
b- hot materials sink, while cooler materials rise
c- hot materials move up or down, while cool materials move sideways.

7. Which layer of rock within the Earth’s interior is the thickest? MANTLE

8. Name the two parts of the mantle region
Upper most part=LITHOSPHERE
Lower part =ASTHENOSPHERE
