Little Advanced but great overview of forces- but remember you do not
need to know how to solve problems for forces- just the types of
forces

ANSWERS
1. What does it mean if an object is in motion?
THE OBJECT HAS A SPEED AND ITS DISTANCE CHANGES FROM POINT A TO POINT B.
2. What is a reference point and why does this reference point have to be stationary (not moving)?
A
REFERENCE POINT IS A STATIONARY OBJECT THAT ALLOWS A PERSON TO TELL IF
AN OBJECT IS IN MOTION. IT HAS TO BE STATIONARY SO YOU DO NOT GET
CONFUSED WHICH OBJECT IS IN MOTION.
3. What two pieces of data do you need in order to figure out the speed of an object?
DISTANCE AND TIME
4. What is the formula used to solve speed?
DISTANCE DIVIDED TIME = SPEED
5.  What is the speed of a person who jogs 125  meters in 55 minutes? SHOW YOUR WORK
DISTANCE 125 M
TIME 55 MINUTES
125 M DIVIDED 55 MINUTES = 2.27 M/MIN
6. How is velocity different than speed?
SPEED INCLUDES THE DISTANCE AND THE TIME OF AN OBJECT, WHILE VELOCITY ALSO INCLUDES THE DIRECTION THE OBJECT IS TRAVELING.
7. A hurricane is traveling 210 miles within 3 hours heading West. What is the hurricane’s velocity?
DISTANCE  210 MILES
TIME 3 HOURS
210 M DIVIDED 3 HOURS = 70 MILES/HR W
8. Define Newton’s First Law of Motion.
AN
OBJECT AT REST WILL REMAIN AT REST. HOWEVER, AN OBJECT MOVING AT A
SPEED WILL CONTINUE AT THE SPEED UNLESS ACTED UPON BY AN UNBALANCED
FORCE.
9.
Why does a person’s body move forward in a car when someone slams on
the brakes? Where is the speed and what is the unbalanced force?
THE
BODY MOVES FORWARD BECAUSE IT IS STILL MOVING AT THE SPEED IN WHICH THE
CAR IS TRAVELING. THE BODY STILL IS TRAVELING WITH THE SPEED OF THE CAR
UNTIL THE UNBALANCED FORCE OF THE SEATBELT PULLS THE BODY BACK INTO THE
 SEAT.
10. Why is wearing a seatbelt in a car so important and how does this connect to Newton’s First Law of Motion?
WEARING
A SEATBELT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT PREVENTS YOUR BODY FROM STILL MOVING
AT THE SPEED OF THE CAR AND FLYING THROUGH THE WINDOW. IT IS AN
UNBALANCED FORCE (SEATBELT) THAT HOLDS PULLS YOU BACK  IN PLACE.
11. What is a force?
PUSH OR PULL EXERTED ON AN OBJECT
Give an example of a force- PUSHING A SHOPPING CART
12. Compare and contrast balanced and unbalanced force.
Unbalanced Force            Compare (alike)        Balanced Force
1- UNEQUAL FORCES            PUSH OR PULL            EQUAL FORCES
2-CHANGES DIRECTION        EQUALS NET FORCE        DOESN’T CHANGE DIRECTION
13. What is a simple machine?
MACHINE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO DO WORK WITH EASE AND LESS EFFORT.
What are the seven types of simple machines?
1-PULLEY                2-GEAR
3-WEDGE                4-INCLINED PLANE
5-LEVER                6-SCREW
7-WHEEL AND AXLE
What is a compound machine?
2 OR MORE SIMPLE MACHINE BUILT INTO A COMPOUND MACHINE
Identify the type of simple machine with each example.
Flag pole-PULLEY
Toilet flusher-LEVER
Binder- WEDGE
Blade of a fan-WHEEL AND AXLE
Stairs-INCLINED PLANE
Water bottle cap-SCREW
Egg beater-GEAR
