Review Guide- Check-Up
1. Name the three types of slides that you can use with a microscope.
WET Mount, DRY mount, Prepared Mount
2. How is a microscope helpful in the career fields of scientists/researchers?
They can examine small specimens and cells to better understand our living world.
3. Compare and contrast a plant and animal cell. At least 2 ideas for each area.
Animal - No cell wall, No chloroplast, do not product own food
Compare- both found in living things, contain nucleus, cell membrane (to name a few organelles)
Plant- Contains all major organelles, ability to produce own food, two layers of protection before entering cell
4. In the data table below, indicate yes or no if the organelle is found in a plant or animal cell.
Organelle | Plant cell | Animal Cell |
Nucleus | Yes | Yes |
Chloroplast | Yes | No |
Cytoplasm | Yes | Yes |
Chromosomes | Yes | Yes |
Nuclear Membrane | Yes | Yes |
Nucleus | Yes | Yes |
Vacuole | Yes | Yes |
Mitochondria | Yes | Yes |
Cell Wall | Yes | No |
Cell Membrane | Yes | Yes |
Nuclear Membrane | Yes | Yes |
5. Describe the function of each of the organelles in the data table. Use notecards to help you!!! Look at your Its Alive Cell Concept term sheet to help you
6. What are the three statements of the Cell Theory?
1. All living things contain cells
2. The cell is the basic unit of all living things
3. Only living cells can produce new living cells
7. Why don’t animal cells have a cell wall?
We have skin that contains lots of layers before we get into the muscle/skeletal system of our bodies. Plants do not have this protection, therefore the cell wall and cell membrane are two layers of protection.
8. Compare and contrast osmosis and diffusion. At least two ideas for each area.
Osmosis- water only- can hydrate or dehydrate cells
Compare-process involved in cells, high- low concentration areas, once areas are equal process stop
Diffusion- nutrients only - can provide nutrition or malnutrition to a body and its cells
9. A gummy bear is place in normal tap water for 24 hours. After 24 hour, the gummy bear expanded in size. Explain using high and low concentration areas why this happened.
High- normal tap water
Low- gummy bear
The water went into the gummy bear from an area of high to low concentration to make the levels equal.
Is this an example of osmosis or diffusion-osmosis
10. How is osmosis and diffusion helpful and harmful to our bodies?
Helpful because it makes concentration levels equal.
Harmful because if we are not well hydrated or eat properly- we could get in a situation of severe dehydration or malnutrition as our cells release water and nutrients to help keep our bodies functioning.

Journal #4
2/7/8 Due Thursday, February 14th
Can you explain why it is not a wise idea for a person to drink salt water, no matter how thirsty that person is?
OR
The
Peterson family is marooned on an island after the sailboat they were
traveling on capsized. The Peterson's will not last long without fresh
water.
Can the family drink the sea
water they see all around them or is there something about sea water
that will not quench their thrist?
Now
you are ready to devise a way to provide the Peterson's with fresh
water using the sea water. Using any or all of the items found on the
island of from the sailboat, try and save the Peterson's.
Bucket, Bamboo, Saw, Palm Leaves, Driftwood, Coconut, Matches
How were you able to save the Peterson's?

YOUR
TASK: Your assignment is to create a travel brochure for either a
plant cell or animal cell attraction. Examples include: Resort,
Amusement Park, Island, Circus, Water Park, Zoo, Museum, Athletic Park,
etc.
GRADING CRITERIA: Below are the requirements for this brochure to receive the grade you decide.
For
example, if you wanted a B- you need to include all grade C terms and
grade B- term along with the numbered requirements (Cell Travel
Brochure Requirements).

CELL TRAVEL BROCHURE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Brochure must fit on a standard size ( 8 1/2 X 11) or legal (8 1/2 X 14) sheet of colored paper that is folded into three sections.
2. Your information must be accurate.
3.
The cell organelles (parts of the cell) must be clearly labeled (using
numbers) and a key for your map must be developed. For example, ( #1)
city hall = nucleus.
4. The structure/shape of the cell organelle is represented. (Use diagrams)
- Map of attraction- include the cell organelle structures on the map
- The overall shape of the cell can relate to your brochure- slice of pizza, Hershey Kiss, lollipop, etc.
5.
The function of the organelle is described in 2-4 sentences. (What is
its purpose in your attraction that connects to the function in a
plant or animal cell?)
6.
You may hand draw, use the computer, use cutouts from magazines, or
photocopies from books in your brochure. Front cover- overview of
attraction
7. You may be as creative, artistic, and humorous as you like.
8. Brochure must be neat and easy to read with minimal spelling errors.
9.
You must use at least 1 website OR 1 book in your research. Write
your bibliography on a separate sheet of paper or in your brochure.
