ANSWERS
Earth Changes
Review Check- Up #1

  1. Label the Earth’s Interior
  1. Continental Crust
  2. Oceanic Crust
  3. Mantle
  4. Outer core
  5. Inner Core

  1. Why is it not possible to travel to the interior (inside) of the Earth?
INTENSE HEAT, PRESSURE, AND DRILLING

  1. Define the following concepts
Constructive Force- SHAPES EARTH SURFACE- BUILDS UP LANDFORMS AND MOUNTAINS
Destructive Force- ERODES AWAY MOUNTAINS AND OTHER STRUCTURES ON EARTH

  1. Describe Wegener’s theory of continental drift. What evidence did he use to support his theory?
ALL CONTINENTS WERE ONCE CONNECTED TOGETHER IN A SINGLE LANDMASS.
LANDFORMS, FOSSILS, AND CLIMATE PROVIDED HIS HYPOTHESIS CORRECT.

  1. Compare and contrast the inner and outer core.

Inner Core  - Dense ball, solid, pressure makes it solid
Similarities- Center of Earth, made of iron and nickel
Outer Core- thick liquid, not as hot as inner core

  1. Compare and contrast the lithosphere and the asthenosphere.

Lithosphere - stone, rigid, upper most part of crust / mantle
Similarities - below crust, part of mantle, middle layer of the Earth
Asthenosphere- soft/weak, flows easily, below the lithosphere

  1. Why are seismic waves used to help understand the interior of the Earth?
SPEED AND PATHWAYS AND ENERGY RELEASE HELP USE DETERMINE THE INETERIOR OF THE EARTH- WHEN AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURS.

  1. Define plate tectonics.
EXPLAINS THE SUBDUCTION AND SLOW CONSTANT MOVEMENT OF THE LITHOSPHERE DRIVEN BY CONVECTION CURRENTS.

HW

Science Quiz Thursday, October 20th- Observations, Inferences, Variables
Review guide answers were checked in class today

Part 1-

1. Manipulated Variable (Independent Variable) - something that is changed on purpose in an investigation.

2. Responding Variable (Dependent Variable) - the affect of the change in the investigation that leads to the outcome.

3. Controlled Variable- a variable that stays the same for accurate data.

Types of variables that can affect different situations....

1. Some examples- soil, amount of water, amount of sunlight, location,

time of year the tree is planted

2. Some examples- shoes, weather, training, sleep, food, age, health conditions

Identify the manipulated, responding, and controlled variables

1. MV (IV)- time of day

RV (DV)- quiz performance

CVs- same quiz, location, teacher, subject

2. MV (IV)- minutes of spelling practice

RV(DV)- scores

CVs- groups of students, environment, study materials, teacher

3. MV(IV)- tennis ball

RV( DV)- best bounce

CVs- parking lot, height of bounce, person, weather

Part II

1. Observation- Describing an object or event using your 5 senses.

2. Inference- An assumption of cause based on the data that was collected. Describing why the data occured using Perhaps/Maybe.

You observe that the sky at noon is darkening.

Perhaps it will rain.

Maybe there is a solar eclipse.

The classroom lights are off.

Maybe there is no school.

Perhaps they are using the Promethan board.

All middle school students are bringing lunch from home.

Maybe they are going on a field trip.

Perhaps there is no hot lunch or food days.
