Supervolcano - Yellowstone National Park USGS

News Reports from yesterday December 16th Summary-
Scientists have used seismic waves and earthquakes in recent years to update the amount of magma they believe is in the hidden caldera under Yellowstone. They are now estimating there is 2.5 more molten magma in the chamber then previously predicted. This information comes from a lead author of Yellowstone history and future, Jamie Farrell of the University of Utah. Currently, the caldera is 88.5 km in length, 29 km in width and is at a depth of 3-9 km depending on the location of recording the information. This new information did not give a sense of when the next eruption would occur, as it is a challenge to predict, but scientist do predict another eruption (VEI 5 or larger) will occur sometime in the future.

The Storybook CHANGE of the Earth

Your Task- You will be developing three story boards in relationship to the past, present, and future of OUR Earth. Select 3 out of the 6 various concepts below we have discussed in-class to develop your story board(your concept term sheets and reference textbooks in-class will help). In each square sequence complete the squares with either a complete sentence, picture, or symbol that describes the transition of CHANGE in OUR Earth.  Remember the future is a prediction based on past observations or events.

Concepts- PICK 3 OUT OF THE 6

1- Interior Earth    2- Continental Drift                   3- Plate Tectonics
4- Rock Stress 5- Richter Scale/ magnitude      6- Earthquakes
