Mrs. Tracey's email hours 6 am- 8 pm weekdays

If you are absent from class, many make-ups occur at 7:20 am. This is due to the time it might take to complete the lab. A shorter lab can usually be made up at lunch recess or X block.

Journal EarChangeth

As humans impact our Earth, we know that earthquakes are no longer events that are made by the Earth.
Humans (through fracking <pumping toxins into the ground to fracture rock and create pipelines to get oil/gas>, geothermal pumping, and quarry blasts (rocks and minerals from Earth) have been the identified source of numerous earthquakes worldwide.
Should scientists develop two data collection systems to track Earth created earthquakes and human created earthquakes (USGS does not distinguish different between the type of earthquake)?

The 411 about VOLCANOES
Your Task- Answer the following questions in complete sentences by using the websites posted below or on my BLOG.

  1. Why is the RING OF FIRE a powerful release of Earth's energy, pressure and heat?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. Describe the different types of volcanoes and give one interesting fact about each type of volcano.
Types of Volcano

Supervolcano
Movie developed by the Discovery Channel

Supervolcano connects to the Earth Changes unit.
Summary- USGS scientists and researchers that work at Yellowstone collect data and use Vergil (prototype of Yellowstone) that predicts a VEI 8 eruption in the near future. The USGS scientists takes steps to inform the public, but the government does not want to cause chaos in the country. Unfortunately, the caldera under Yellowstone erupts causing a VEI 8, and USGS along with the government have to work together to handle this natural disaster today, tomorrow, and in the future.

During and after watching this movie, students will be able to:
1. Determine the cause and effect relationships during a VEI 8 volcanic eruption.
2. Identify the predictions and hypotheses that lead up to a VEI 8 volcanic eruption.
3. Evaluate the government and scientists plans for the evacuation and aftermath from the volcanic eruption.
4. Recount scientific Earth changes concepts such as: lava, magma, seismograph, Richter Scale, caldera, lava flow, pyroclastic flow.
5. Analyze from the scientific predictions and data if a Supervolcano eruption will occur at Yellowstone in the near future.

PowerStandards - 6th grade science

Standard 11 # 2
Plan and construct and test prototypes using technological design
Learning Target- Collect data for analysis
Predict results of prototype (Vergil - in movie)
Draw conclusions from qualitative and quantitative observations
Standard 13 #2
Apply and use of appropriate scientific tools and technological devices in inquiry or design investigations
Learning Targets- Identify appropriate scientific tools and technological devices in
     inquiry or design investigations

Standard 12 E #3
Analyze the process of our dynamic Earth and connect to present day environmental conditions
Learning Targets- Infer how plate movements have impacted populations, ecology,
     and Earth’s geological features
     Understand constructive and destructive forces
Understand the location of frequent earthquakes and volcanoes
that provide evidence for plate tectonics

Journal Entry Checklist------Cranium Crunch

1-You can Google Doc OR handwrite your entry in your spiral notebook

2-I will only accept them on the due date unless you know that you will be absent when they are due

3- If you are typing on a Google Doc, please double space

4-Just start writing... you do not have to write out the question and then start writing.... think of this as a diary....
5-Journal Entries through a Google Doc
1. Share Google doc with me through email.

2. Add message function when Google doc is shared.  Write an email message to me stating what journal entry you are submitting.

3. Can share with me at any time before the due date and by 2:40 pm on the date it is due. If it is an early release day it is due by 12:25 pm.

4. If you submit your journal entry after 2:40 pm or 12:25 pm, it is considered LATE.
